The 30th edition of the B.C. Historic Motor Races were held on the August 19/20th weekend. These races did not count for points in either the CACC Formula Ford Championship or the SCCBC Formula Ford Championship for those competitors who participated. In all there were 6 Formula Ford races over the 2 days and 9 Formula Ford drivers were entered. In addition to our local drivers there were 3 out of town drivers who made the trip to Mission Raceway to join the group. They were Chris Schoap from Eugene, Oregon who brought his Titan Mark 6, Doug Lorraine from Three Hills, Alberta in his Lola 540 and Lorne Andras from Sidney, B.C. who brought along his rare Monarch Mark 8. In addition to these 3 the group was joined by Pam Williams who entered in her colourful Van Diemen RF78, and it was great to see Pam out again in her car as it has been a couple of years since she last had it on track. We had one last-minute entry in the group when Marty Knoll from Kelowna, B.C. took over Andrew Dobbie’s Van Diemen RF91 for the weekend after the engine in the vintage Formula Atlantic car he was scheduled to drive failed.
Doug Floer, although losing one position in each of races 2 and 3 due to consecutive infractions, managed to win 3 of the 6 Formula Ford races over the weekend including the Hagerty Formula Festival Race for the Westwood Trophy on Sunday afternoon. The other race winners included Dave McKay in Race #2 on Saturday, Alan McColl in Race #3 also on Saturday, and Alan Baker in Race #4 on Sunday.
Despite an accident in Race #4 on Sunday morning that took out the cars of both Dave McKay and Alan McColl, through no fault of theirs, it was still a very good weekend of racing. While Dave and Alan were uninjured in the shunt their cars were damaged badly enough that they were not able to compete in the final 2 races on Sunday afternoon.
In addition to the Formula Ford race group, there were races for vintage sedans and sports cars which also provided a great deal of entertainment for the spectators. If you enjoy watching and perhaps reliving some memories from B.C.’s road racing past then you will have to add this event to your list of things to do next season and come on out and join in the excitement.
