The start of the 2017 race season began as a soggy affair on Saturday, not unusual for this time of the year. Thankfully the weather conditions did improve as the weekend progressed.

We also had 2 new comers to the Formula Ford group join us for this first race of the year. Erle Archer in his Tiga FF79 is from Kelowna and has previously competition experience in the sports racer class and Andrew Dobbie is from Langley and he is new to the sport. We hope to see them both at the majority of our races this season.

Race #1

The first qualifying session of the year, in very wet conditions, saw a battle between Doug Floer in his #62 Topsoft Computing Systems Inc. Van Diemen RF94 and Alan Baker in his #21 Van Diemen RF89. In the end Doug turned the fastest lap and out qualified Alan by less than 3/10s of a second to claim the top position among the Formula Ford drivers. Next came Andrew Dobbie in his #93 Dowco.com Van Diemen RF91 he was followed by Erle Archer in his #04 Tiga FF79.

At the start, on a wet track, Doug grabbed the lead in the Formula Ford race and then came Alan, Andrew and Erle. Almost immediately the race went under a full course caution for a car that had spun out in Turn #1 and was blocking the track. Racing resumed on Lap #3 with Alan chasing Doug, as both cars came through Turn #4 Alan lost control and spun off the track. He was able to rejoin the race but had dropped one position to 3rd place as Andrew had got past him. On the following lap Andrew spun out in the same corner as Alan had the previous lap. This allowed Alan to reclaim 2nd place which he held onto until the checkered flag. The finishing order was Doug Floer in 1st place, Alan Baker in 2nd place, Andrew Dobbie in 3rd and Erle Archer in 4th.

Qualifying : 1). Doug Floer (Van Diemen RF94) 1m28.314, 2). Alan Baker (Van Diemen RF89) 1m28.742, 3). Andrew Dobbie (Van Diemen RF91) 1m33.998,
4). Erle Archer (Tiga FF79) 1m46.688

Race #2

The Sunday morning qualifying session for Race #2 was in much improved weather conditions than the previous day and the track had dried out. We had 2 regulars from last season Dave McKay and Keith Robinson rejoin the group for the Sunday races. Unfortunately Andrew Dobbie was not able to race on Sunday as he is still a novice driver.

Doug Floer in his #62 Topsoft Computing Systems Inc. Van Diemen RF94 was the fastest Formula Ford qualifier. He was followed by Dave McKay in his #45 KV Enterprises/Bad Dog Business Lola 644 and Alan Baker in his #21 Van Diemen RF89. Next was Erle Archer in his #04 Tiga FF79. Keith Robinson in his #90 K & G Auto Recycling Van Diemen RF82 did not qualify so he would start the race from the back of the grid.

As the cars gridded up for the start of the race Dave was late to pre-grid and he was forced to start the race at the back of the grid beside Keith. At the start of the race Doug led the Formula Fords into Turn #1 he was followed by Alan Baker and hard charging duo of Dave and Keith as they made their way up through the field. Doug led the race from start to finish and was never challenged for the top spot. On Lap #3 Dave passed Alan to take over 2nd place but he was to far back from Doug to have any hope of catching him. On Lap #11 Keith was able to get by Alan and take over 3rd place. Alan’s car had developed a high speed misfire early in the race which had slowed him down considerably. Following Keith’s pass on Alan there were no further changes in position and the finishing order remained Doug Floer in 1st place, Dave McKay in 2nd place, Keith Robinson in 3rd place, Alan Baker in 4th and Erle Archer in 5th place.

Qualifying: 1). Doug Floer (Van Diemen RF94) 1m13.843, 2). Dave McKay (Lola 644) 1m18.135, 3). Alan Baker (Van Diemen RF89) 1m19.250, 4). Erle Archer (Tiga FF79) 1m28.261, 5). Keith Robinson (Van Diemen RF82) No Time.

Race #3

Having had the fastest lap in Race #2 Doug Floer in his #62 Topsoft Computing Systems Inc. Van Diemen RF94 earned the privilege of starting this race on the pole position for the Formula Fords. He was followed by Dave McKay in his #45 KV Enterprises/Bad Dog Business Lola 644 and Keith Robinson’s #90 K & G Auto Recycling Van Diemen RF82. They were followed by Alan Baker in his #21 Van Diemen RF89 and Erle Archer in his #04 Tiga FF79.

When the green flag dropped to start the race Doug once again jumped into the lead and once again the drivers were faced with a car spinning out in Turn #1. This time it was Alan and Keith who had to take evasive action, by taking to the grass on the outside of the corner, in order to avoid this wayward car. Both Doug and Dave happened to be ahead of this melee which allowed them to break free from the rest of the Formula Fords. As the race progressed Doug was able to pull away from Dave and he maintained his lead to the finish of the race. Dave finished in 2nd place and Alan was in 3rd place and Erle finished in 4th place. Unfortunately for Keith his race ended on Lap #3 due to an electrical problem which caused his car to come to a stop in Turn #2.
