With the absence of Alan McColl from Round #3 of the CACC Formula Ford Championship it looked like it would be an ideal opportunity for his closest competitors to make up some ground on him in the Championship. His main rivals for the title this year Keith Robinson and Doug Floer were in high hopes of gaining some significant points from some well placed finishes and or wins this weekend. In addition to the points battle this race weekend we also saw the return of Randy Mainwood to our Formula Ford group after a 6 year hiatus and we were happy to have back on the grid.
Saturday morning’s qualifying session saw Dave McKay in his 1984 Lola 644 grab the pole for the Formula Ford group with a time of 1:14.206. He was followed by Keith Robinson in his 1979 Van Diemen RF79 at 1:14.607. Next up was Randy Mainwood in his 1991 Citation at 1:18.075 and Doug Floer in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81 at 1:18.650. For Frank Winterlik qualifying proved to be a major source of frustration as he only completed half a lap before the throttle linkage in his 1982 Van Diemen RF82 broke. This unfortunately meant he had no qualifying time and had to start the race from the back of the grid.
As the field of cars came around Turn #9 to complete their pace lap and take the green flag to start the race Dave McKay’s Lola hesitated for just a moment under acceleration and that was all the opportunity Keith Robinson needed as he past Dave on the run down into Turn #1 to take the lead of the Formula Ford race. At the end of the first lap it was Keith Robinson leading followed by Dave McKay, Doug Floer, Randy Mainwood and Frank Winterlik. For the next 2 laps Keith was able to hold off Dave but as the cars crossed the start/finish line at the end of Lap #4 it was Dave McKay back into the lead. Dave was then able to slowly pull away from Keith and the rest of the group. He was able to maintain his lead until the checkered flag. Finishing in 2nd place was Keith Robinson followed by Doug Floer and Frank Winterlik. Unfortunately for Randy Mainwood his 1st race back ended prematurely as his engine expired in a big way on Lap #10.
Sunday’s qualifying session resulted in a a starting grid very similar to the previous day’s grid. The exception being Doug Floer in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81 had moved up to 2nd position ahead of Keith Robinson who he bumped down to 3rd place. The starting grid for the Formula Ford group saw Dave McKay in his 1984 Lola 644 on the pole with a time of 1:14.397, followed by Doug Floer at 1:14.882, Keith Robinson 1979 Van Diemen RF79 at 1:15.789 and Frank Winterlik ‘s 1982 Van Diemen RF82 at 1:15.881. The stage was set for a very exciting and close race.
This time around Dave McKay would not flounder at the drop of the green flag. He jumped into the lead right off the start and he was quickly followed by Keith Robinson who had made up the one place he had been demoted in qualifying by passing Doug Floer. At the end of the first lap we had a nice 3 car train consisting of Dave, Keith and Doug. Unfortunately Doug’s race came to a grinding halt on Lap #3 in Turn #3 as his left front tire touched the tire wall at the apex of the corner which resulted in a bent steering arm and he was forced to retire from the race. Then on Lap #12 in a surprising turn of events Keith Robinson rolled into the pit lane and withdrew from the race with over heating issues. This in turn promoted Frank Winterlik into 2nd place in the race. Both Dave and Frank finished the race in 1st and 2nd places respectively.
So by the end of Sunday’s race only Keith Robinson was able to significantly close the points gap on Alan McColl. While not racing Alan was still able to come away from the weekend with the unofficial lead in the CACC Formula Ford Championship. He currently has 36 points and his 2 nearest challengers are Keith Robinson with 33 points and Doug Floer with 15 points. Their next opportunity to go for the Championship lead will on the August 3rd & 4th 2013 race weekend back at Mission Raceway Park.
