This weekend encompassed races #7,#8 & #9 of the CACC Championship for Formula Fords. Unfortunately we were missing a few regulars, Alan Baker was out due to an engine problem in his Van Diemen RF89, Keith Robinson had gone to the Formula Ford 50th Anniversary Races in Indianapolis, Andrew Dobbie was at the Formula One race in Montreal and William Kwan’s car was still under repair after his mishap the previous race in April. This resulted in a very sparse field of only 3 cars entered for this event.
Doug Floer in his #62 Van Diemen RF94 was the fastest of the Formula Fords in qualifying. He just beat Dave McKay in this #45 Lola 644 by 26/100ths of a second to grab the pole position for the Formula Ford race group.
At the start of the race it was Doug who led the group into Turn #1 he was followed by Dave and Erle Archer in his Tiga FF79. Part way through the race there developed a sprinkle of rain which was just enough to make the track surface a bit wet in a couple of places. One of those spots was Turn #3 and it caught out Dave on Lap #9 as he did a half spin but he was able to carry on without losing any on track positions. At this point Doug appeared to have the race in hand until he came upon a lapped car going into Turn #7 on Lap #12. The driver of this slower moving car didn’t see Doug as he tried to pass him going into the corner, the resultant chaos saw Doug’s car end up hitting the tire wall in Turn #7B. Luckily his car suffered no damage and he was able to rejoin the race but not before Dave had passed him to take over the lead of the race. With only 3 laps remaining in the race the chase was on as Doug drove as hard as he could to catch Dave’s black Lola. As they commenced their final lap Doug was within a couple of car lengths but he need a lucky break to be able close that gap. It came his way in Turn #7 when Dave’s car pitched sideways, even though he was able to catch the slide, it gave Doug the chance he needed. Carrying more speed through Turns 8 & 9 than Dave he pulled along side Dave as they exited onto the main straight and it was a drag race to the finish line. Doug was victorious by mere inches as they crossed under the checkered flag, Dave had to settle for a less than satisfying 2nd place with Erle a distant 3rd .
Qualifying : 1). Doug Floer (Van Diemen RF94) 1m12.368
2). Dave McKay (Lola 644) 1m12.394
3). Erle Archer (Tiga FF79) 1m20.680
Fastest Race Lap : Doug Floer 1m12.605
In qualifying for this race Dave McKay in his Lola 644 was not able to match his pace from the previous day and turned in a time well over a second slower than our Formula Ford pole sitter Doug Floer in his Van Diemen RF94. They were followed by Erle Archer in his Tiga FF79 who has slowly been coming to grips with his new to him car.
At the start of the race once again Doug got the jump on both Dave and Erle as he led them down into Turn #1. It was a lead he would never relinquish over the next 16 laps as he took the checkered flag in 1st place. In 2nd place came Dave who valiantly tried to find away past Doug but despite his best efforts he could not get by him. Unfortunately for Erle his race ended in Turn #2 on the first lap when a driver in another class, in an ill judged move, turned into the side of him and spun his car out of the race.
Qualifying : 1). Doug Floer (Van Diemen RF94) 1m12.178
2). Dave McKay (Lola 644) 1m13.301
3). Erle Archer (Tiga FF79) 1m19.149
Fastest Race Lap : Doug Floer 1m11.699
Due to problems with his car following his shunt in Race #2 Erle Archer chose not to start this race. With only the 2 cars of Doug Floer in his Van Diemen RF94 and Dave McKay in his Lola 644 remaining, of the Formula Fords, we were hoping they would put on a good show for the final race of the weekend. As in the 2 previous races Doug grabbed the lead going into Turn #1, this time he was able to put another car between himself and Dave for 4 laps. By the time Dave got past this car Doug had opened up a gap of several seconds over him, try as he might he was not able to match Doug’s pace and he couldn’t close the space between them. They finished the race in this order.
Fastest Race Lap : Doug Floer 1m11.934
The next race in the CACC Championship is on July 15/16/2017 at Mission Raceway.
