Round #2 of the CACC Formula Ford Championship saw the return of drivers Dave McKay, Doug Floer and Felim Power to the series. Unfortunately Rick Payne and Craig Archer where not able to attend.

Race #1

Saturday morning’s practice and qualifying sessions were uneventful with no serious misfortune befalling any of the drivers. Alan McColl in his Tiga FF77 again set the pace in both sessions and he set a qualifying time of 1:12.315 that was quick enough to put him on the pole for the Formula Ford group. Next came Dave McKay in his Lola 644 at 1:14.056 as he was still shaking the rust off after a long winter away from racing. He was followed by Keith Robinson in his Van Dieman RF79 at 1:16.301 then came Felim Power in his Van Diemen RF81 4th fastest at 1:17.040. In 5th place on the grid was Brad Miller in his Crossle 35F at 1:17.072, with Doug Floer in his Van Diemen RF81 at 1:17.544 and Fed Wong in his Crossle 45F at 1:20.045.

For Doug Floer his qualifying time was a disappointment as he had been expecting a much faster time after having his car completely rebuilt over the winter. His dismay was relieved when he found out the source of his slow pace was a punctured front tire that was slowly losing pressure.

For Saturday afternoon’s race the conditions were almost ideal. The track was dry and racing surface was warm so the tires could get up to optimal temperature but not so hot as to cause over heating issues. From the start, Alan McColl jumped into the lead and was followed by Dave McKay and Keith Robinson as they exited Turn #1. They in turn were followed by a hard charging Doug Floer, who had a new front tire to replace the one he punctured in qualifying. On the opening lap he passed both Brad Miller and Felim Power to take over 4th place. For the next 9 laps Doug and Keith Robinson battled for 3rd place. Then on lap 11 Doug finally managed to get around Keith to take control of the position for good and maintained it to the finish of the race. Further back in the field Brad Miller was forced to retire from the race on lap 4 with gearbox issues.

The final finishing order was Alan McColl in 1st place, Dave McKay in 2nd, Doug Floer in 3rd, Keith Robinson in 4th, Felim Power in 5th and Fed Wong in 6th.

Race #2

With weather and track conditions almost a repeat of Saturday the grid positions following Sunday morning’s qualifying were very similar to the day before. The major difference being Doug Floer moving up 2 positions on the starting grid to 4th among the Formula Fords. Alan McColl in his Tiga FF77 once again claimed the pole position for the Formula Ford group with a time of 1:12.979, followed by Dave McKay in his Lola 644 at 1:13.701 and Keith Robinson in his Van Diemen RF79 at 1:14.813. Then came Doug Floer in his Van Diemen RF81 at 1:15.727, Felim Power in another Van Diemen RF81 at 1:19.071. Brad Miller in his Crossle 35F was next with a time of 1:20.752 and Fed Wong in his Crossle 45F at 1:23.488.

As the green flag flew to start the race Dave McKay’s Lola suddenly bogged down and he was passed by both Keith Robinson and Doug Floer even before the cars got to the braking zone for Turn #1. By the time the cars came around to complete lap #1 Dave had made his way back around Doug and was in full chase mode to try and catch Keith Robinson and Alan McColl. The next lap around Dave had made significant inroads into Keith’s lead and as the cars exited Turn #9 to complete another lap it was Dave ahead of Keith. Unfortunately for Dave his march to the front of the Formula Ford race ended there for as hard as he tried he was not able to close the gap to Alan McColl. Alan was able to reel off a number of laps during the middle portion of the race in the 1:12 second range that Dave was not able to match.

The race ended with Alan McColl firmly in the lead followed by Dave McKay, Keith Robinson, Doug Floer, Felim Power, and Fed Wong. For Brad Miller who did not finish the race due to a punctured rear tire it was a sad way to end his racing with us at Mission Raceway. Unfortunately for us Brad is leaving B.C. to return to the USA and he will be missed by us all. We wish him well in his racing endeavors down south.

The unofficial CACC Formula Ford points standings now after 4 races in the championship have Alan McColl leading with 36 points, 2nd place is Keith Robinson with 18 points, Doug Floer is in 3rd place with 10 points, Rick Payne is in 4th place with 8 points. In 5th place is Felim Power tied with Brad Miller and Craig Archer at 6 points, followed by Fed Wong with 4 points.

Our next race is July 13/14 weekend and we look forward to seeing you all at Mission Raceway for some more great open wheel racing.
