Congratulations to both Brad Miller and Keith Robinson on their race wins.
This was an ICSCC (International Conference of Sports Car Clubs) sanctioned double race weekend with races on both Sunday and Labour Day Monday.
For Sunday’s race Craig Archer in his 1985 Swift DB-1 had qualified on the pole for the Formula Ford group with a time of 1:13.192. This was his first outing in the car since he bought it and the car seemed to be living up to early expectations. He was followed by Keith Robinson in his 1979 Van Diemen RF79, Brad Miller in his1984 Swift DB-1 and Steve Hocaluk in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81. Unfortunately for Craig, his dream of a victorious debut in his new car was not to be as he was not able to convert his pole position start into a race win. After leading the opening 12 laps of the race his car suffered a mechanical failure which put him out of the race. This turned the lead of the race over to Brad Miller. Brad and Keith Robinson were involved in a mighty fight of their own for 2nd place until Craig’s retirement. Brad had passed Keith under braking going into Turn #1 on Lap 9 and from that point on he was dogged by Keith for the remainder of the race. It was quite a sight as Keith’s Van Diemen was glued to the back of Brad’s Swift for lap after lap as Keith searched for a way to get around the Swift but in the end Keith had to settle for 2nd place.
The finishing order was Brad Miller in 1st, followed by Keith Robinson in 2nd and in 3rd place was Steve Hocaluk.
Keith Robinson in his 1979 Van Diemen RF79 qualified for the pole position in the Formula Ford group for Monday’s race with a time of 1: 18.354. He was followed by Brad Miller in his 1984 Swift DB-1 and Steve Hocoluk in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81. Craig Archer’s Swift was not able to start the race as his car could not be repaired overnight.
Keith led the race from start all the way to the chequered flag. He had some early pressure from Brad Miller but when Brad spun his car in Turn #1 on Lap #11 it was all over. Keith was able to open up an insurmountable lead over the rest of the field. For Keith it was just a matter of keeping his concentration up and his car on the track all the way to the end of the race.
The finishing order was Keith Robinson in 1st followed by Brad Miller in 2nd and Steve Hocaluk in 3rd.
We would like to extend a welcome to Brad Richards from Mukilteo, Washington who made his Mission debut in the Novice Open Wheel Race. Brad was driving a very nicely prepared 1979 Crossle 35F. Hopefully we will get to see more of Brad as well as other Formula Ford drivers from Washington and Oregon States at future Mission races.
The next race at Mission Raceway will be on the Sept 22/23 weekend and it will be Rounds 7 & 8 of the CACC Championship. After 6 rounds of the Championship Alan McColl is leading with 39 points following by Keith Robinson in 2nd place with 33 points and Brad Miller in 3rd place with 22 points.
