The battle for the 2013 CACC Formula Ford Championship has come down to this the last race weekend of the season. It would be a fight between two drivers to see who would be this year’s champion. Alan McColl was coming in this round of the championship with a 1 point lead over Keith Robinson, he was leading with 47 points to Keith’s 46 points. The winner of these next 2 races would be crowned the champion.

Race #1

Following Saturday morning’s qualifying session it was Alan McColl in his 1977 Tiga FF77 who had grabbed the pole position for the Formula Ford group with a fastest lap of 1:13.400. He was followed by his closest rival for the title Keith Robinson in his 1979 Van Diemen RF79 at 1:14.980. Next up was Dave McKay in his 1984 Lola 644 at 1:15.118 and Frank Winterlik in his 1982 Van Diemen RF82 at 1:16.220. The 5th fastest was Doug Floer in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81 at 1:16.424 and in 6th place was Alan Baker driving his 1989 Van Diemen RF89 at 1:16.439. They were ahead of Fed Wong in his 1981 Crossle 45F at 1:20.812 and Brad Smith who was giving his 1994 Van Diemen RF94 it’s first shake down run after doing a complete rebuild of the car. Unfortunately for Brad he ran into a clutch problem that forced him to withdraw from the event.

At the start of the race Alan McColl jumped into the lead of the Formula Ford race. He was followed by Keith Robinson, Dave McKay, Doug Floer, Frank Winterlik, Alan Baker and Fed Wong. This race was stopped twice for 2 separate black flag incidents that resulted very little racing action and a shortened race of only 12 laps due to time constraints. Despite this Alan McColl never relinquished his lead in the race and by the end of it he had built up a comfortable gap over 2nd place finisher Keith Robinson. Both Keith and Dave also maintained their starting places throughout the race, Dave tried numerous attempts at overtaking Keith but none of them were successful. Further back in the field Frank Winterlik had made a pass on Doug Floer on the 2nd lap to move up a position into 4th place. He managed to hang on to this spot for the next 9 laps but on Lap #10 Doug found an opening and made his pass on Frank to retake the position. Once by Frank he was able to hold on and crossed the finish line in 4th place ahead of Frank who finished in 5th. They were followed home by Alan Baker and Fed Wong.

The final finishing order was:

1st – Alan McColl

2nd- Keith Robinson

3rd – Dave McKay

4th – Doug Floer

5th – Frank Winterlik

6th – Alan Baker

7th – Fed Wong

Race #2

Following Saturday’s race Alan McColl had now stretched his lead over Keith Robinson in the Championship to 4 points. The gap was not enough for Alan to relax and just cruise around in today’s race, as a poor result in this event could still hand the 2013 title to Keith.

The final qualifying session of the season once again produced a familiar sight as we had Alan McColl in his 1977 Tiga FF77 sitting on the pole position for the Formula Ford group with a fastest lap of 1:13.103. Next up was Dave McKay in his 1984 Lola 644 at 1:14.824 followed by Keith Robinson in his 1979 Van Diemen RF79 at 1:14.919. Next to Keith was Frank Winterlik in his 1982 Van Diemen RF82 at 1:15.295 and Doug Floer in his 1981 Van Diemen RF81 at 1:15.503. The 5th fastest qualifier was Alan Baker in his 1989 Van Diemen RF89 at 1:15.680 and he had Fed Wong in a 1981 Crossle 45F beside him with a best time of 1:18.803.

In a repeat of the previous race weekend Alan McColl’s starter motor failed him in pregrid as it refused to start his car’s engine. This resulted in him losing his qualifying position and he would have to start the race from the back of the grid. Once the rest of the cars had left pregrid he was able to get a push start and join the field on their pace lap. When the green flag flew to start the race it was Dave McKay who lead the group into Turn #1 followed by Keith Robinson, Doug Floer, Frank Winterlik, Fed Wong, Alan Baker and Alan McColl. As the cars came around to Turn #5 there was wheel to wheel contact between the cars of Alan Baker and Alan McColl. Unfortunately Alan Baker came out the worst in this exchange as he wound up spinning which dropped him down to last place. On the next lap Alan McColl had made up 1 more position as he passed Fed Wong to take over 5th place. Meanwhile up at the front of the race Dave and Keith were engaged in a spirited battle for the lead, they exchanged 1st place a couple of times until a hard charging Alan McColl caught and passed both of them on Lap #4. Once back into the top spot of the race Alan was able to maintain this position to the finish. Following their earlier battle for the lead both Dave and Keith settled down to finish 2nd and 3rd respectively. They were followed by Doug Floer in 4th, Alan Baker who fought his way back into 5th with a very good drive and Fed Wong in 7th place. What had started out as a very good race for Frank Winterlik ended in disappointment as his car ran out of gas with only 3 laps to go, he ended his day in 7th place among the Formula Fords.

The final finishing order was:

1st – Alan McColl

2nd – Dave McKay

3rd – Keith Robinson

4th – Doug Floer

5th – Alan Baker

6th – Fed Wong

7th – Frank Winterlik

With the final race of the CACC Formula Ford Championship over the 2013 Champion is once again Alan McColl. In 2nd place is Keith Robinson and 3rd place belongs to Doug Floer. Congratulations to these drivers on their fine results and thanks to all the other drivers who came out and took part in this championship as well as all the other races at Mission Raceway this season. We hope we will see you all again next year along with some more new faces competing for the 2014 Championship.
